The Week in a Minute, October 21, 2011

  • BP and Andarko settled up. Andarko will add $4B to a claimant compensation fund.
  • Earnings season got under way. I’ll be compiling results at the Q3 Link-o-rama.
  • Incoming SOA president Brad Smith proposed a merger of the major U.S. actuarial associations. CAS takes a measured response (including a survey) here. Makes me feel old, because it feels like I’ve seen this proposed quite a few times.
  • If there was a hurricane, the Florida Hurricane Cat Fund would be pretty much broke, its financial adviser told it. It would need to borrow $11 billion, but would only be able to scare up about $8B. Out of the Storm blog says what I would have.
