A new study published in the journal PLoS One has found that those who have a wider social network may catch the flu sooner than others.
I’m more intrigued by the idea, later in the post, about the friendship paradox. If you ask a bunch of people to name a friend, that friend probably has more friends than the person you are talking to.
This is mathematically inevitable. There’s an elaborate explanation of why this is so here, but I think the diagram at right keeps things simple but still does the job.
